Dural Puncture Kit

  • Manometer
  • CSF collection tubes x3 or 4
  • Sterile gauze

General

  • Syringe, 5mL
  • Needle for local anaesthetic (25G)
  • Needle for drawing up
  • Dural puncture needle, pencil point (Sprotte, Whittaker, Gertie Marx or similar), 22G or smaller
  • Dressing, occlusive island

Drugs

  • Chlorhexidine 2% or povidone-iodine
  • Lidocaine 1% or 2%, with adrenaline

Post-Procedure

  • Opening pressure measured
  • CSF collected
  • Dressing applied
  • Documentation completed

Notes

  • Lateral position required to measure opening pressure
  • Avoid using Quincke / cutting tip needles, and larger gauges, due to the risk of post-dural-puncture headache
